The talking cricket liked it when his friend Pinocchio came to visit. They would talk about the adventures they had when Pinocchio was still a puppet!

It was even more fun when Pinocchio brought his kids. Twig, Oakley and Maple were full of energy! They enjoyed playing with the blue-haired fairy who lived next door and making pancakes for dinner. The kids liked flipping them and the cricket didn’t mind the mess!

When the sun set, though, it was time for bed.

“I’ve filled your hot water bottles and given you extra blankets,” he chirped. “Now, get into bed and I’ll tell you a story.”

“I’m thirsty!” said Twig. She picked up a big glass of water.

“Only take a mouthful!” the cricket warned. “Otherwise you’ll have to go to the toilet!”

Too late! Twig drank the whole glass at once.

Then, there was a sound like a herd of elephants trumpeting. “What’s that?” cried the cricket.

“Oh, I need to practise the trombone!” Oakley said proudly.

“Now is not the time! Loud noises won’t help you sleep!” replied the cricket. He put the instrument away and took Oakley back to bed.

When he hopped downstairs, he found Maple peering into a kaleidoscope and watching the changing colours inside.

“Those moving images will make you too excited!” chirped the insect.

When Uncle Cricket finally managed to tuck all three kids into bed, he was too tired for a story. He blew out the candle and promised to tell them one tomorrow. But try as they might, the children couldn’t get to sleep.

“I need the toilet!” Twig complained. Oakley couldn’t stop humming a tune, and Maple was wide awake.

The cricket was enjoying a nice cup of tea by the fire with the blue-haired fairy when he noticed three pairs of eyes peering at him.

“We can’t sleep!”

The cricket gave a merry chirp.

“Pinocchio didn’t always take my advice either, but he learned in the end – and you will, too. I’ll tell you the tale of how your dad escaped from the belly of a giant fish...”

He took them by the hand and led them upstairs. The kids climbed into their bed and the insect began to tell them a story. Before the tale was finished, Uncle Cricket heard the children snoring and chuckled.

They were just like their father!
